Why and how NCEPOD uses patient data without consent

The National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD), reviews the quality of care provided to patients to highlight improvements that could be made.

To be able to run their studies hospitals to send them a big dataset (often 1000s) of all patients and from this big group NCEPOD randomly select around 1000 patients to undertake a closer review of their care.

All patients in England can opt out of their data being used for research. Many of the non-research national programmes that review quality of care (national audits/mortality reviews) are exempt from removing the data of patients who have opted-out to ensure that serious patient safety issues are not missed. NCEPOD would like to apply for the same permission.

Exploring wellbeing for people with osteoporosis and/or broken bones

Keele University are researching how osteoporosis can impact wellbeing.
Osteoporosis is a common condition which can increase the chance of breaking a bone. This is because your bones become weaker and are likely to break more easily (for example, from a simple fall on flat ground).

Do you have osteoporosis? Have you broken a bone easily or have you been offered osteoporosis medicines? Take part in a survey to help explore and address how this can affect wellbeing.

For voluntary and community organisations and groups

NICE are exploring how digital health technologies (such as apps and remote monitoring tools) may impact different groups, particularly people who may face barriers to accessing or using digital tools. Your insight will help us better understand where inequalities may arise and how they can be addressed in NICE’s work.

About the survey

The survey asks about:

  • Your organisation’s experience of supporting people affected by digital exclusion
  • Barriers and challenges people face in accessing digital health technologies (e.g. access, skills, trust, or accessibility needs)
  • Groups who may be disproportionately affected
  • Examples of good practice or potential solutions
  • Any evidence or insights you think NICE should consider

It should take around 22 minutes to complete.
